Optional Backgammon Game Rules Players Can Use

Like some games, backgammon is a game with many variations and players can opt which one they will adopt according to their preferences. Such variations on backgammon game rules are made because of different reasons, some are developed so as to make backgammon more interesting, make backgammon be more adapted to certain types of matches such as those that involve money or just make a simple backgammon game into something completely new.

The Beaver Rule

The Beaver rule revolves around the doubling cube and the issues around it. In a regular game of backgammon, a player cannot immediately redouble and have possession of the doubling cube. However, on a game with the Beaver backgammon game rule, a player can have control of the doubling cube so long as an offer to double is made by the opponent.

With the increased stakes introduced by the variation, the Beaver backgammon game rule is most often used in games where money is at stake than in serious backgammon matches such as those played in tournaments.

The Crawford Rule

Another optional backgammon game rule, the Crawford rule is used to settle the issue over a player with one point away from winning and the doubling cube. According to the Crawford rule, a player who has only one point away from victory is forbidden from using the doubling cube as doing so is exploiting the fact that there is no drawback from using the doubling cube when one is one point away from winning.

Such exploitation is readily apparent especially in a match where two players are each one point and two points away from the victory. The one-point player can use the doubling cube wantonly as there will be no risk involve while the two-point player won't have the same luxury as doubling is still a risk.

The Jacoby Rule

The Jacoby optional backgammon game rule states that a triple or double stakes will only be counted if the doubling cube has been used once in the game. This rule is used to prevent players who have secured a comfortable lead to push for higher stakes and end the game easily.

The Automatic Doubles

This optional backgammon game rule doubles the stake in a match whenever a doubles appear on the dice. Doubling the stake will not only happen in the opening of the match, but rather on the whole proceedings of the game which means that if there is total of 4 doubles in the game then the stake will be sixteen times larger than that of the original stake which was agreed upon earlier.

Optional backgammon game rules are made for those who want to make their backgammon matches refreshing and more exciting as they add rules that makes the game more thrilling to play especially in matches where money is at stake.
